Old Glory flies over George Washington Bridge in New York City, USA

Several times a year, a work crew hoists Old Glory up under the arches of the George Washington Bridge. Today being Flag Day, commuters crossing the Hudson River between Fort Lee, New Jersey, and Manhattan will get a glimpse of the banner rippling in the air. The flag’s been flying here on special occasions and some national holidays since 2006.
The name of the span references a fraught moment for General Washington during the Revolutionary War. American forces were using Fort Lee and Fort Washington (in New York) to defend New York City from a British invasion. But by mid-November 1776, the general fled with his men across the river to Fort Lee and the English took Fort Washington. This is the basic path that the bridge now follows.
